At the founding of Juniper Networks, Vinod Khosla describes how he and Pradeep Sindhu [Founder of Juniper Networks] decided to go with TCP/IP rather than what customers wanted which was ATM. He implies that the Internet would have been governed by ATM if not for his decision. That does seem rather unlikely as the right technology would eventually become dominant - other companies like Cisco would have embraced TCP/IP.
